Differences Between Fruiting Body And Mycelium in Mushroom Powder

Dec 30, 2025

Mushroom powder from fruiting bodies and mycelium varies notably in raw materials, composition, and production. Neither is absolutely better; the choice hinges on specific needs. Below are their key differences and selection suggestions.

1.Source and Morphology: Fruiting bodies are mushrooms'reproductive organs (e.g., shiitake caps, lingzhi brackets), the traditional edible and medicinal core. They rely on artificial cultivation or wild harvesting, highly affected by climate and pests. Mycelium is the filamentous vegetative organ, cultivated via liquid deep fermentation in tanks with controlled temperature and pH, free from natural restrictions for more controllable production.

2.Active Ingredients: Fruiting bodies have higher active component content-polysaccharides (shiitake 20-40%, lingzhi 10-30%), abundant triterpenes and sterols closely linked to traditional efficacy, with a little dietary fiber and chitin needing purification. Mycelium mainly contains extracellular polysaccharides (10-25%) with some structural differences, lower triterpenes, less chitin, good water solubility, and simple impurities, suitable for various formulations.

3.Production and Stability: Fruiting body production involves "cultivation-harvesting-drying-grinding", taking 3-6 months, with high labor costs, unstable batch composition, and high loss rates. Mycelium fermentation only takes 7-15 days. Industrialized parameter control ensures strong batch stability, small floor space, high efficiency, and large-scale production to meet orders quickly.
