Eriocitrin is a naturally occurring flavanone-7-O-glycoside compound, with its molecular structure consisting of a flavanone skeleton (with erigeronol as the aglycone) linked to a disaccharide rutinose.
It is connected to the plant body through glycosidic bonds on the 7-hydroxyl group. Commonly known as lemon flavonoids or citrus flavonoids, it is one of the plant pigments that add color to fruits and flowers.
As a representative flavonoid compound in the secondary metabolites of citrus plants, it is widely distributed in the peel, flesh, and juice of fruits in the Rutaceae family, such as lemons, grapefruits, and limes. Its antioxidant capacity is significantly stronger than that of flavonoids such as hesperetin and naringenin.
