Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin

What is sodium copper chlorophyllin made of?
Sodium copper chlorophyllin is extracted from natural chlorophyll in mulberry leaves, silkworm excrement, alfalfa or spinach. By replacing the magnesium ion (Mg²⁺) at the center of the chlorophyll molecule with a copper ion (Cu²⁺) and removing the hydrophobic phytol long chain, it is transformed from an oil-soluble and unstable natural chlorophyll into a water-soluble, vividly colored and highly stable sodium copper chlorophyllin.

Food Industry: Used as a natural colorant (E141) in products like pasta, candies, beverages, and dairy.
Cosmetics & Personal Care: Applied in soaps, toothpaste, mouthwash, bath products, creams, and masks as a colorant and functional agent.
Oral Care: A common active ingredient in toothpastes and mouthwashes for its color and odor-neutralizing properties.
Dietary Supplements: Utilized in certain health supplement formulations.

Stable Coloring Agent: Provides a consistent, bright green hue that is less prone to fading in neutral to alkaline conditions.
Good Compatibility: Easily incorporated into water-based and hydro-alcoholic systems.
Deodorizing Properties: Recognized for its ability to help neutralize certain odor molecules, making it a functional ingredient in oral care and deodorant products.
Antioxidant Activity: The compound may contribute antioxidant properties to formulations.

Q1: What is the typical usage percentage of Sodium copper chlorophyllin?
A: Usage level is typically low, ranging from 0.001% to 0.2% as a colorant, depending on the desired shade intensity and application. Always start at the lowest effective dose.
Q2: How is Sodium copper chlorophyllin added to a water-based formula?
A: Sodium copper chlorophyllin can be dissolved directly in the water phase. Pre-dissolving in a small amount of warm water before adding to the main batch ensures even dispersion and avoids specks of color.
Q3: Is Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin a natural colorant?
A: It is derived from natural chlorophyll but is chemically modified for stability. Its regulatory classification as a "natural colorant" depends on the specific regulations of the target market.
