The deadly toxins in belladonna, if inhaled in sufficient doses, can have severe effects on the central nervous system. The toxins unknowingly paralyse nerve endings in the muscles of the invader, such as those of the blood vessels, heart and gastrointestinal tract. Its leaves, fruits and roots contain toxic components belladonna alkaloids, scopolamine and so on. It is most virulent when it reaches 2 to 4 feet (0.6 to 1.2 meters) tall, with dark green leaves and purple bell-shaped flowers. Berries are sweet and juicy, often confusing to children. It flourishes in places with rich soil and plenty of water. It is abundant in some parts of the world, but in the United States, it is found only in cultivation and almost nowhere in the wild.
