Three Core Ingredients Of Reishi: Fruiting Body, Spore Powder, And Mycelium

Dec 22, 2025

Products made from any part of Reishi, including the fruiting body, mycelium, and spore powder, etc., what are the differences among these raw materials? This article will provide a detailed analysis.

Fruiting Body

  • "The fruiting body" refers to the actual mushroom body of the Reishi. As the core part of the traditional application of Reishi, its medicinal value is both recorded in ancient classics and verified by modern science. The fruiting body is rich in various active substances such as polysaccharides, triterpenoids and amino acids, and is a high-quality health food raw material.
  • The key harvesting points directly determine the value: The harvest should be carried out at the critical moment when the spores are fully mature and the whitish growth ring on the outer edge of the mushroom body has just receded (at this point, the content of active ingredients reaches its peak). If the timing is missed, after the spores are completely released, the mushroom body will gradually become woody, leaving only an empty shell structure, and a significant loss of core nutrients will occur.

Spore powder

  • Spores are the reproductive cells released by the mature fruiting body of Reishi. Their role is similar to plant pollen, and their core function is to reproduce offspring. It is not difficult to cultivate a large number of fruiting bodies to obtain a large amount of spores.
  • In addition, the spores themselves are as fine as powder and can be directly used without much processing, which creates a market advantage for spore powder. This characteristic not only simplifies the production process but also retains the natural active ingredients to the greatest extent, making it a cost-effective raw material choice for Reishi.

Mycelium

  • Unlike fruiting bodies and spore powder that require the complete cultivation of Reishi mushrooms, the raw material used in one type of Reishi product does not require such elaborate cultivation. It only needs to inoculate the bacterial strain into a culture medium containing carbon sources and nitrogen sources to grow clusters of white mycelium.
  • Compared with the 3-6 months required to cultivate fruiting bodies, a large amount of mixture of Reishi mycelium and culture medium can be obtained in just 2 weeks, which greatly reduces the cost. However, due to the omission of the key growth process of "fruiting body differentiation", the components in the mycelium are relatively single, most of which are polysaccharides. Therefore, it is more suitable for product scenarios that require targeted supplementation of polysaccharides.

The diverse activity of fruiting bodies, the cost-effectiveness of spore powder, and the short cycle and low cost of mycelium constitute the differentiated advantages of Reishi raw materials. Healthdream Bio. has been deeply engaged in the selection, cultivation, and application of these three Reishi raw materials, enabling the natural value of Reishi to align effectively with modern health needs.
