Senna Leaf Extract

What is the history of senna?
The peoples of northern Africa and southwestern Asia have used senna as a laxative for centuries. Senna is traditionally considered a "cleansing" herb for its cathartic properties. More modern research has found senna to be very effective in treating constipation—whether drug-induced or natural. In addition, its leaves are sometimes made into a paste and applied to a variety of skin conditions. Both ringworm and acne can be treated with this.

The active ingredient in senna leaves is called senna. This molecule is converted by microbes in the colon to another substance, anthrone rhubaronate, which has beneficial effects of stimulating colon activity (which speeds up peristalsis and improves digestion) and increasing fluid secretion. The laxative effects of sennoside and its active metabolite, rhubaranthrone, are thought to inhibit the absorption of water and electrolyte by the large intestine, thereby increasing the volume and pressure of intestinal contents. This stimulates the propulsive contraction of the colon. In addition, stimulation of active chloride secretion increases the content of intestinal water and electrolyte. These changes in the transport of the active electrolyte depend on the calcium element on the serosal surface. The laxative effect of sennoside is partly mediated by stimulation of colonic fluid and electrolyte secretion, and this secretion capacity is regulated by stimulation of endogenous prostaglandin formation.

Senna leaf extract can be used as weight loss products, health care products, etc.

Senna leaf, the synonym of Zhana leaf, laxative leaf, and bubble bamboo leaf is the leaflet of legume plant Senna angustifolia or Senna acuminate. The English name FOLIUM SENNAE is a stimulant laxative, which stimulates bowel movements through the intestinal mucosa and nerves. It is a strong drug and it is recommended to use it as little as possible. Acts on the colon and generally takes effect within a few hours.
