Does keratin is good for growth of hair?
Hair is made of keratin. This tough protein chain is formed by locking various amino acids and is combined with water, lipids, minerals and melanin. Although keratin in our hair can make hair strong, it is vulnerable to damage under extreme conditions and daily wear and tear. Therefore, hydrolyzed keratin is used in a variety of hair care formulations to replenish the weakened substances in the hair.
Keratin essentially is a large protein molecule. After enzymatic hydrolysis, the large molecular weight is converted into a small molecular weight, which is good for hair absorption. When hydrolyzed keratin is applied on the hair, it helps to fill the small gaps in the entire hair shaft, including its three layers, namely the stratum corneum, cortex and medulla oblongata. Filling these tiny gaps with decomposed protein can temporarily increase the strength of the hair, thereby minimizing the damaging effects of sunlight, heat setting, chemical treatment and mechanical operations (or combing)
