Photolyase

Photolyase

Photolyase is a repairing ingredient derived from biomimetic technology, capable of precisely identifying the damage caused to skin cell DNA by ultraviolet exposure. Upon exposure to indoor and outdoor natural light (especially the blue light spectrum), this enzyme is activated, functioning like a "molecular repairer" to directly initiate photocatalytic repair, restoring damaged DNA to its original state. Its core value lies in surpassing traditional protection and achieving "active repair", helping the skin reverse photodamage and delay signs of photoaging from the root. It is commonly used in high-end anti-aging essences, enhanced sunscreens, and intensive repair products.

Question

What is photolyase?

The photolyase from Healthdream is derived from Thermus thermophilus, a DNA repair enzyme that specifically targets and reverses UV-induced DNA damage, especially cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs). Originating from the thermophilic bacterium Thermus thermophilus, this enzyme exhibits high thermal and structural stability, making it particularly suitable for use in cosmetics and dermatological preparations aimed at protecting and repairing the skin. DNA repair enzymes represent a rapid repair mechanism that does not rely on the cell's own level. They utilize light energy to repair DNA damage and reverse aging genes, thereby achieving anti-aging effects.

Repair mechanism & steps:

In the structure of photorepair, there are two crucial components. One is methyltetrahydrofolate, which functions like a solar panel, capable of absorbing photon energy. The absorbed energy is then transferred to another component, flavin adenine dinucleotide (FADH). FADH absorbs another photon and performs catalytic functions to repair cyclic guanosine monophosphate-guanosine monophosphate (CPD) damage in DNA, before leaving to continue repairing the next damaged site.

This process takes 1.2 nanoseconds.

application

DNA repair and anti-aging: Incorporating into anti-aging products to reverse skin DNA damage caused by UV rays.

Enhanced sunscreen: As an additive, it enhances the efficacy of sunscreen products. The core mechanism is to supplement the deficiencies of traditional sunscreen from the aspect of repair.

Post-sun care: Used in post-sun care products to accelerate the recovery of damaged skin.

Q1: Can photolyase replace sunscreen?

A: No. Photolyase repairs DNA damage after it occurs. Sunscreen prevents ultraviolet rays from penetrating. The two work synergistically, rather than being interchangeable.

Q2: What is the difference between DPP-IV and conventional proteases?

A: Standard proteases can cleave many peptide bonds, but they are powerless when dealing with sequences rich in proline. Dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) has proline specificity and can trim the N-terminal dipeptide, where the second residue is proline (or alanine), thereby accelerating the decomposition of recalcitrant food peptides.

Q3: Is photolyase suitable for sensitive skin?

A: Yes. Most formulations have undergone skin testing and have demonstrated good tolerability, especially when encapsulated in liposomes.

Q4: Can photolyase repair existing skin damage?

A: It can repair persistent DNA damage caused by ultraviolet exposure and reduce long-term mutation accumulation, but it cannot reverse existing structures or collagen breakdown.
